Nashville TN Tummy Tuck/Abdominoplasty compared to Liposuction
So when you’re thinking about abdominoplasty,
A lot of people ask me “Hey, can I just have liposuction instead? I mean isn’t it kind of the same thing? And maybe liposuction is less recovery time and maybe even less expensive.”
And you may be surprised to know that that’s not necessarily the case. They’re really two different procedures that accomplish two very different things.
Abdominoplasty addresses excess skin and muscle weakness, whereas liposuction does not
An abdominoplasty actually addresses the excess skin and excess tissue, fatty tissue, on the abdomen. It also addresses the muscle weakness underneath. That’s a very important part of the abdominoplasty. And so tightening the muscle underneath is in some cases maybe 80% of the flattening of the abdomen.
Now liposuction on the other hand is simply suctioning the fat out of that area. Liposuction does not address muscle weakness; there’s no tightening of the muscles– zero. And it does not address excess skin or skin laxity. For example, for my ladies who have been pregnant and have excess or baggy skin in the tummy area, liposuction definitely would not address that.
And so these are two very different procedures that address two very different things, and aren’t always interchangeable. And depending on how much liposuction you might end up needing, it may or may not be less expensive than an abdominoplasty and it may or may not have less recovery time. It all depends on your individual situation.
