When considering breast augmentation in Nashville TN, patients often ask whether smooth breast implants or textured breast implants are the best plastic surgery choice for their breast enhancement.

Smooth breast implants or textured breast implants – Which are best? – Nashville TN Plastic Surgeon Amy Ortega MD Explains
So there are many different types of implants available. Now this is an example of two types of implants: smooth, round silicone gel and textured round silicone gel.
Breast Implant Texturing – Helpful or not?
The reason that implant companies began using texturing on implants is that there was some thought that using the texturing might help prevent the hard scar capsule around the implant called capsular contracture, which is a risk with all implants. Some studies seem to point towards the fact that the texturing helps, and some studies don’t necessarily point that way. And so I’m not convinced.
Now, I can say that the texturing is designed to have the patient’s natural breast tissue almost sort of grow into the texturing surface so that it almost sticks to it microscopically, almost like velcro. Which I can tell you can be problematic if you ever have to have your implants removed or replaced because it makes it very difficult for me, the surgeon, to remove the implant when it’s sticking to the inside of you like velcro.
Textured breast implants do not necessarily prevent capsular contracture of the breast after breast augmentation, and may show more wrinkling or rippling
And I actually have had this experience before. I can also tell you that I have had patients who have had textured implants who have developed capsular contracture. Patients who have come to me for implant exchanges who had hard scar capsules and it turns out they had textured implants. So you can still develop hard scar capsules with textured implants.
Because of those items, I don’t necessarily see a strong benefit. I’m not convinced that textured implants are a benefit. They can show rippling and wrinkling a little more because they adhere to the breast tissue.
Dr. Ortega often recommends smooth round breast implants
And so I usually prefer smooth, round implants for that reason, which we can discuss more at your consult when you come into my office.
