Some Nashville TN breast implants patients are under the mistaken impression that their breast implants need to be exchanged every 10 years.
In this video, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Amy Ortega MD explains where this misconception may originate, and that there is no “mandatory switching out” of breast implants every 10 years.

So I often get the question as to whether breast implants have to be switched out every so often, kind of like an oil change or something.
And I wonder if that might come from the warranty programs that the implant companies offer, which usually has something to do with a ten year mark. And so people sometimes assume that that means in ten years the implant might wear out or might have to be switched out.
And that’s actually not the case. If you’re not having any problems with your implants, there really is no reason to routinely switch them out or do anything to them unless you wanted to change something. For example, if you wanted to change the size, or for example if you wanted to get a breast lift, then this is a good time to change the size, that sort of approach.
Breast Implant Manufacturers are tying warranty benefits to a 10-year timeframe
Now the implant companies do warranty the implants, just like any medical device. And so for example the silicone gel implants are warrantied for your life against a rupture. And that means if it breaks they would provide you a replacement at no cost, and then if it happens to rupture before you have had it for a full ten years, they will also provide a portion of the cost towards your implant replacement surgery.
So that doesn’t mean that if you’ve had it for more than ten years that you have to have the implant switched out. It just means that you have a ten year warranty on your silicone gel implant. If you’re not having any problems with your implant, there’s no reason to have surgery.
